Society and Solitude

Standard: 

RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
RL.11-12.2 Determine two or more themes of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text.
RL.11-12.9 Analyze how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes or topics and compare the approaches the authors take.

Activity: 

1.  Society and Solitude

With a partner, read and annotate pages 137-139 in your StudySync book.
Highlight quotations that you find interesting, important, or confusing that relate to the overall theme.

2.  Collaborative Annotations


Follow the steps below:  

1.  Write down a quotation from the reading that was interesting, important, or confusing.
Then, write 3-4 sentences reacting to the quote. (5 minutes)
2.  Sit in a circle with your group, so you can all see each other. 
3.  Pass your writing to the person on the left when I say time. 
4.  Read the writing from your peer and respond to the writing on the same piece of paper, expanding on what the previous students wrote.  Your response should also be between 3-4 sentences.
 (3 minutes)
6. Repeat until you have your original piece of writing.
7. Read through the comments.
8.  Answer the question: Based on the annotations, what is a potential theme of Society and Solitude?
9.  Share ideas with the class. 

3.  Graphic Organizer.

You will receive a handout titled Two-Theme Concept Map.
Individually, complete the handout by identifying four pieces of textual evidence that supports each topic. (You will have a total of EIGHT quotes.)

Complete for homework over the weekend if you do not finish in class.
